ABOUT KATHRYN NORTH

I am a Higher Education professional with 23 years of experience of working in research and researcher development, which includes developing researchers from junior to senior career stages across a wide disciplinary range. I am an effective leader, team manager, bid writer, mentor and facilitator, with leadership and management experience across a broad portfolio including managing multi-million-pound budgets and projects.As Director of C-DICE I led the development of the proposal to secure £4m from Research England, plus £3.4m matched funding commitment, from 18 HEIs and industry partners to establish the Centre. Running since 2021, the multi-institutional collaborative project works closely with industry and HEI stakeholders, employing a team of 10 across 3 Universities, to create innovative development opportunities for postdoctoral researchers to generate solutions for achieving net zero carbon in the Infrastructure, Cities and Energy domain. This brings together the UK Collaboratorium in Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC) and the Energy Research Accelerator (ERA).My experience of leading collaborative research training programmes includes as Head of ERA Skills, established in 2016, ERA skills has created a community of doctoral researchers working across 8 partner Universities to provide highly trained, networked and skilled researchers. In my role as Head of Researcher Development I have led the Doctoral College, spearheading new initiatives to effectively transform PhD student recruitment, managed the studentship portfolio (c£10m), led and managed the University’s ESPRC Doctoral Training Partnership strategy and budgets (c£14m total), and created a high quality experience for Doctoral Researchers. Alongside this I worked with senior colleagues to establish the Research Leaders programme, including overseeing a step change in attracting high quality researchers funded on external Fellowships, and set up the Institute of Advanced Studies to develop international links and partnerships.I am committed to being an ally for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, to my own and other\'s professional development and life-long learning, and to creating supportive research cultures that enable individuals and teams to thrive and undertaking impactful research.Professional Qualifications and recognition include- B.Sc and Ph.D (Lancaster University)- Advanced Certificate in Executive Coaching- ILM Level 7 Leadership Coaching and Mentoring- PRINCE2 Practitioner- Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
