ABOUT KATHLEEN GORMAN

Greetings. I live on ᐊᒥᐢᑿᒌᐚᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ Amiskwacîwâskahikan, Treaty Six Territory, Métis Nation Regional Zone 4. I have been working in the fields of trauma, grief & loss, mental health and addictions, as well as domestic and sexual violence for 40 years with Indigenous families & communities, government, mental health & addictions services, & non-profit agencies. I have held various leadership, clinical counselling, & community development positions in rural & urban locations. My clinical social work counselling practice (in-person & virtual sessions) is trauma-informed/specific, anti-oppressive, anti-racist, decolonizing & holistic: Incorporating somatic/sensorimotor psychotherapy approaches, intergenerational trauma, developmental trauma, EMDR, CBT, expressive arts, & other contemporary modalities & traditional Indigenous ways of knowing & healing. I also provide trauma-informed clinical supervision (individual & group). See more details re: my private practice in the \"Experience\" section of my profile. I also provide consultation, training & policy support in areas including empathic strain (compassion fatigue), vicarious trauma & self-care, impacts of colonization, intergenerational/historical trauma, trauma-specific & trauma-informed (TI) practice, TI clinical supervision, TI organizational assessments, as well as supporting human services agencies to develop into full TI service delivery models over time. I provide training workshops & I am a frequent speaker at local, provincial, national & international conferences. I have been on the Planning Committee for the International Training Summit on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (held annually in San Diego, CA) since 2012. I have been a TEND Associate since 2019 (TEND provides resources and training to address the complex needs of high stress, trauma-exposed workplaces across North America). My academic background includes a BSc in Psychology, a Graduate Degree in Health Administration, a Masters in Health Law & a Masters in Social Work, Clinical Social Work Practice. I am a registered social worker in clinical practice in Alberta, Canada, a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner & SE Training Assistant, & a certified trauma treatment specialist (CTTS) with the international Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists. In addition to my private practice work, I provide individual & group counselling at Aboriginal Counseling Services Association (a domestic violence agency for Indigenous men, women & children) & I am a sessional instructor for the University of Calgary Faculty of Social Work.
