About Kathie Klarreich

Founder and Executive Director of Exchange for Change, a nonprofit that offers semester-long writing classes in South Florida correctional institutions and runs letter-writing exchanges with local academic public and private schools, colleges and universities. Prior to my prison work, I had a 25-year career as a journalist in print, television and radio (TIME, Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times, ABC, NBC, NPR). Much of my work as a journalist was focused on but not exclusively limited to Haiti, where I lived for 13 years (19••••98 and 20••••13). In 2005 Nation Books published my memoir, Madame Dread: A Tale of Love, Vodou and Civil Strife in Haiti. I am also published in three anthologies: Women Writing and Prison, So Spoke the Earth and Be Kindre. I am strongly committed to improving the lives of conditions of everyone in my community, which includes those living on both sides of the prison walls.

   Exchange for Change believes in the power of written partnership to promote dialogue and effect social change. In addition to a variety of writing classes (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, rhetoric, play writing, debate and journalism) we facilitate writing classes and anonymous writing exchanges between students in correctional, transitional, and court-mandated facilities, and students in high school and university classrooms.
