About Katherine Mott
I am a qualitative researcher and PhD candidate in sociology with 7+ years of experience managing comprehensive research projects. Additionally, I have served as the Instructor of Record for Social Problems (2022-Present, Syracuse University) and Introduction to Sociology (2025-Present, Colgate University). My dissertation research used participant observation and interviews to examine how algorithmic technologies are altering the retail industry and what this means for the future of work. I reveal how various high-tech, consumer-focused products deployed at the cash register reshape customer-worker interactions. Past research projects examined how people respond to inadequate housing conditions and how people navigate the U.S.\'s social safety net. I expect to graduate in 2026.Research interests: Work and labor, technology, organizations, the future of work, urban poverty, housing, welfare policy, and food studies.Research methods: Ethnography (participant observation), interviews, surveys, focus groups, strategic corporate research.
