About Katherine Lemasters

What I do: I am an assistant professor at the University Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine. I work at the intersection of social epidemiology and health equity with a focus on mass incarceration as a structural determinant of health inequity. Why I do it: In 2019, I visited the prison where a loved one was incarcerated and was struck with the realization that a pervasive cause of health disparities in the US, mass incarceration, was missing from my understanding of social and structural determinants of health. While the criminal legal system affects millions, contributes to drastic health disparities, and is intertwined with many other systems and structures, it is largely understudied in social epidemiology.Skillsets: Quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis • Building partnerships with communities experiencing health inequities in the United States and globally • Interview guide, scale, and survey development • R, STATA, and SAS for quantitative and NVivo and Dedoose for qualitative analysis • Racial Equity Institute Phase I training
