ABOUT KATE MONAHAN
I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Human Rights and Social Justice at Thompson Rivers University. My research looks at (1) what it means to presence (Koe & Loukes, 2024) Indigenous knowledge within post-secondary adventure tourism programs which are inherently shaped by colonial structures and (2) what responsibilities we settler educators hold, especially when we benefit from Indigenous teaching, ceremony, and land-based knowledge. I see this work as the foundation for my future doctoral research on the broader role of decolonization and emancipatory entrepreneurship in reshaping economic systems.After more than a decade in progressively more senior accounting and finance roles, I now have more than another decade under my belt as a canoe guide, a post-secondary educator, a consultant, and a small business owner. I draw on all of these experiences to ask the questions about making tourism and education more equitable and accountable to the humans and more-than-humans they touch.I blend critical inquiry with grounded practice; I firmly believe research should be reciprocal, relational, and useful to those it represents.I\'m interested in connecting with other scholars, educators, and practitioners who are reimagining how we teach, learn, and do business in a decolonized future.
