About Katelyn Okano

As a recent Electrical Engineering graduate from UC San Diego, and after 10 years of participation in engineering team projects, I am excited to be entering a new stage of my life as I make the transition into the workforce. During my time at UCSD, I had the pleasure of joining our chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS), as part of electronics and data analytics for Colossus, our static fire rocket engine test stand. I also had the honor of serving as Vice President of Operations during my junior year. For the past two summers, I interned at Naval Information Warfare Pacific (NIWC PAC) as part of the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program, where I worked on High Frequency (HF) radio propagation research and designed devices to improve the installation and maintenance processes of HF radio racks.Having lived in San Diego county my entire life, I often find myself wanting to give back to the community that raised me. I began my robotics mentorship journey in 2017 as a high school student looking to get volunteer credit hours, but I quickly discovered that it was one of my true passions. I began with teaching elementary school students programming and robot design in FIRST Lego League, and eventually moved up to VEX Robotics Competition at the middle school level. I returned as a mentor for my high school FIRST Robotics Competition team throughout my college years to help rebuild the team upon their return following COVID-19, and I am now going into my fourth year of mentoring with FRC.Outside of engineering, I am a theater kid and a geek at heart. When I’m not working on projects, you can most likely find me listening to K-pop and musicals, playing the Legend of Zelda, or expanding my LEGO collection.
