She joined in 2025 to support the recruitment of Explorers and grantees in the region, as well as helping to build community through facilitating events and training programmes, and supporting outreach communications to promote Explorers\' work through National Geographic media titles, channels and programmes.

ABOUT KATE STEPHENSON
Kate works as part of the International team at the National Geographic Society, as Regional Manager of Europe and Western Asia. Utilising knowledge from her Head of Department role at grant-giving conservation NGO, the Whitley Fund for Nature, as well as 8 years of board trustee experience at international wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation, she combines skills from her career as a professional content creator, communicator, journalist and subeditor to support Explorer Engagement. Kate is proud to have worked for National Geographic KiDS Magazine, Discovery Communications, Channel 4 Learning, Channel 4 Talent, BBC Blast, Archant, Executive Grapevine, Today Magazines and Cubiqdesign, as well as running her own Kate on Conservation Blog, for which she was awarded the WeNaturalists Nature Storyteller of the Year 2022 Award for leading the creation and editing of ‘Connection With Nature’ book - an anthology by multiple contributing authors. She graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in 2013 with a First Class Honours degree in English Language and Communications with Journalism and Media Cultures, completing four years of study, including a study abroad year in Australia, where she undertook a further six modules of Journalism and two modules of Internet Studies. Her time at university saw her step into the role of Deputy Print Editor, and she was the Deputy Editor of her Student Union’s newspaper; UniVerse, and the Editor of BlueMoon magazine. During this time she was closely mentored by Terry Mansfield CBE.In her final year, Kate was awarded an \'Outstanding Contribution to Media\' award and the university prize for \'Outstanding Student Contribution to the Humanities Programme\'. While on study abroad, she achieved the \'Most Valuable Player\' award for her work on as part of a Print Production team that produced two newspapers. She also won an award at the Student Recognition Awards Evening for her \'Soapbox Blog\' about the student experience.Her passion and curiosity for culture and politics began at the age of 14, with her first published magazine article. She has since had hundreds of articles, photos and pieces of design work published. Her interests also span to photojournalism and art; she has had 2 solo exhibitions.
