ABOUT KATE
I’m a social scientist-turned-user researcher, helping organisations understand how their customers with disabilities experience their products and services. I learn from strategies that customers already use to tackle access barriers, and show how these strategies point the way to better design. How I got here: I started out in academia, studying how Deaf sign language users build communication routines with non-signing family members, coworkers, and members of their broader communities. I later broadened this research to explore barriers and problem-solving approaches of people with a wider range of disabilities.These days, I use my research toolset to help organisations understand how their customers with disabilities are managing frictions, revealing opportunities for better design. I’ve led research across 14 industries, exploring how disabled consumers navigate digital and physical barriers, and worked with cross-functional teams to translate those insights into practical improvements—often by building directly on the adaptations users are already making.
