About Kate Maughan
I graduated cum laude from American University in December 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (focusing on Peace, Global Security, and Conflict Resolution and Russia/Eurasia). After graduation, I worked mainly in the legal field and spent just over a year living in Brazil. Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Arts in International Affairs with a focus on Global Gender Policy at George Washington University. My goal is to further my education and professional experience so I can leverage my skills at organizations that strive for meaningful policy change in the gender and LGBTQ+ space.

Leading, transcribing, and coding hour-long semi-structured qualitative interviews with 13+ advocates and NGO workers in Hungary, Poland, and Romania• Collaborating with other researchers to compile coded interview findings, desk research, and secondary quantitative analysis into a practitioner-oriented report with general recommendations for LGBTQI+ organizations operating in closing civic spaces• Providing advocacy-specific recommendations for the Háttér Society to combat anti-LGBTQI+, anti-gender, and illiberal rhetoric and policies based on the best practices uncovered in Poland and Romania
