ABOUT KATE MANDEVILLE
I am a public health physician with 14 years of experience and a drive to produce results with social impact. I have worked on public health policy in local, regional, national, and international organizations. I have crossed disciplinary and sectoral boundaries to more effectively tackle difficult health system challenges. For example, my PhD utilized health economic methods to investigate health worker retention in Malawi. As an intern doctor, I founded a charity to improve health worker supply and retention in low-income countries, which has now supported 5% of all doctors in Malawi. I later established collaborations with cognitive psychologists to examine the effectiveness of plain cigarette packaging, which was cited in a government-commissioned evidence review to inform UK legislation. Finally, a recent publication in the British Medical Journal led to a change in policy at NICE that will reduce commercial influence in UK health technology assessment.
