ABOUT KATE CHIN ALEONG

My journey in software development has been one of continuous learning and growth, mixed with adversity and resilience building. I quickly learned that I needed to be in a working environment where differences are not only accepted but embraced. At that time, I did not fit into what was perceived to be a stereotypical developer (an outgoing, extrovert who loves to laugh and build relationships) and was unwilling to change who I was to fit that mold. I was lucky to eventually find an employer who\'s core values aligned with mine where I was able to hone my skills, build long lasting relationships and can proudly say I have a proven track record of delivering high-quality, impactful solutions used by 100s of customers and millions of users. Beyond my technical proficiency, I believe in the power of clear communication, collaboration, fostering a supportive work environment and enjoying what you do and how you do it. My colleagues know me for my candor, my ability to bring daily levity to work and commitment to continuous improvement, both for myself and those around me.On my resume it will simply say “Software Development Engineer” with a shortlist of my responsibilities, but during my tenure at Workday, my role and contribution encompassed so much more than just that. The core of who I am as a colleague and contributor lay above and beyond the technical. I have had the privilege of recruiting and mentoring 10’s of intern students, creating a safe space where questions are not only welcomed but encouraged. My goal is to empower interns to embrace curiosity, take ownership of their learning, and build the confidence to contribute meaningfully to the team. I want them to gain new skills, but more importantly, gain a genuine enthusiasm for software development and a belief in their own potential. Another role that was a large part of my identity was Giving & Doing Local Leader for my entire tenure, organizing 100s of hours of volunteering opportunities and raising over $50k in donations, directly giving back to our local community and providing opportunities for workmates to connect and build relationships not bound by team, organization, seniority or area of expertise.I believe that tech is for everyone and should be made by everyone. A career highlight of mine was being selected as a speaker for Workday at the GraceHopper Celebration of Women in Computing, sharing my own journey in tech with the purpose of inspiring recent graduates that you could find work in tech where more than just the number of lines of code you wrote, could be valued.
