About Kate Baldwin
I opted for the nontraditional career path, and I am grateful for every shift, stumble, and summit. My professional background includes 15+ years in the health and wellness industry where I owned/operated a yoga school and events business, launching the first of many large scale yoga and music festivals in Hawaii and Virginia. I also taught musical improv for 6 years, successfully launching the first program of its kind in Hampton Roads. My experience teaching and training teachers opened my eyes to the potential that exists in all of us, often waiting to emerge once we feel supported and safe. This is what ignited my passion for people management and leadership. We all need managers and leaders who keep us on track to becoming better professionals (and humans). I’ve traveled all over North America and Europe, but my very favorite travel destination is India. I’ve been there twice, once to explore Ayurveda and yoga philosophy and another to film the documentary \"Beyond the Surface,\" highlighting the power of surfing and yoga. I love collaborating with cultures different from my own. It requires curiosity, empathy, and respect- values which I consider to be leadership non-negotiables. I also love animals, which is what led me to the Virginia Beach SPCA in 2018. This opened my eyes to the nonprofit realm, exposing me to the power of a group of people making a difference in the lives of innocent animals. It made my heart sing. And sometimes cry. Animal welfare can be extremely difficult, but watching second chances unfold in real time is fuel for even the most weary of souls. And more than that - the people who work in animal welfare are truly inspiring. Their dedication and passion is exemplary, and I love being among them. I love being one of them. I have worn just about every hat you can wear in nonprofit management, including marketing and communications, fundraising, events, partnerships, volunteer management, humane education, finance and business operations, strategic planning, and HR. I have had many successes and stumbles, and my colorful experience can help organizations thrive. My education includes a bachelors focused on creative writing and literature and a masters in public administration and policy. They are very different areas of study, but they have shaped who I am and what I prioritize as a leader: creativity, culture, impact, and sustainability. Let’s connect and figure out how we can do better for the animals, each other, and the planet.
