About Kate Abney
I am an educator at heart and I derive immense pleasure from teaching. As a social anthropologist, I am fascinated by people and the pursuit of a better understanding of what makes them tick. I like to build cool projects with folks who like to question the status quo. I want my students to be curious about the world they inhabit, and their influence in it. My professional experience includes working with primarily (although not exclusively) university-going students in anthropology, social justice activism, urban studies, and global health. My research interests include the social experience of infectious disease (specifically HIV and TB), maternal health and reproductive rights, and medical pluralism. I have extensive teaching experience at the university level (local and international) and have helped build, implement and manage multi-country semester experiential education abroad programs. I advocate for transformational over transactional learning, radical pedagogy and critical dialogue as a teaching tool. Good things happen when we ask: why?
