ABOUT KATARINA DYCK
I graduated from McGill University with a Joint Honours BA degree in English Literature & Russian Studies and a minor in World Cinemas. I am currently an English Literature MA student at Queen\'s University. My research interests include Victorian Studies, the Female Gothic, psychological fiction, Slavic speculative fiction, folklore studies, addiction literature and film, and intersections between nineteenth-century British and Slavic literature. My undergraduate thesis is titled \"Taking Out the Needle: Tracing the Evolution of Chernukha in Pre-Soviet, Soviet, and Post-Soviet Addiction Literature and Film.\" In it, I analyze some of the most insurgent addiction literature and films from Russia during the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, which provide a cultural foundation underlining chernukha’s resistance to the demands of Socialist realism, as well as its impact on those struggling with addiction in a heavily censored society.
