About Katalin Bártfai-Walcott
I’ve spent 33 years and 120+ patents building technology. Now my work focuses on one challenge: giving people real control over their data.My career began at IBM, where I helped shape the Linux strategy and earned a Chairman’s Award. At Intel, I served as CTO of the OpenFog Consortium and led working groups on distributed computing. Over three decades I’ve filed more than 120 patents and written 30+ technical papers that influenced how the industry thinks about edge computing, IoT, and distributed systems.Somewhere along that journey, I realized we were building an extraordinary digital infrastructure on a broken foundation. People have no real control over data that defines their lives. That realization led me to found Synovient. The problem is simple to describe and hard to ignore. Your health data, behavior patterns, and digital identity are collected, analyzed, and monetized every day. Most of this happens without your awareness and almost never with meaningful consent. In healthcare alone, it has created an $84 billion market built on patient data that patients do not own, cannot see, and cannot govern. Now, as AI companies accelerate model training on human data, the extraction is increasing. At Synovient, we are building true data sovereignty. Not policies, but architectures that embed ownership, consent, and control directly into data itself. Our partnership with MatchRite Care, which connects to 90 percent of U.S. health systems, is aimed at giving patients real ownership of their health data. We are also developing approaches that allow artists to protect their work in the streaming and NFT economy. This is not a privacy or security problem. It is an architectural problem. We optimized for performance, scale, and efficiency, but never built for human agency. We now have a narrow window to correct that before AI systems become too entrenched to unwind.I am building in public, sharing what we learn about data sovereignty, AI, and digital rights. I speak, write, and advise in these spaces because this is not just a business challenge. It is a structural question about the future of human autonomy. If you are working on digital rights, data sovereignty, healthcare innovation, ethical AI, or technology that does not exploit users, I welcome the conversation.
