Enactus is an international non-profit organisation, that aims to, with the help of entrepreneurial action, steer forth the next generation of social innovators and entrepreneurs. With its wings spread over 36 countries-India being one of them- Enactus has successfully provided succour to over a million people worldwide. The Enactus unit of Kamala Nehru College of the Delhi University, made its foray into the culture of entrepreneurship in 2017 with its pilot project ‘Kadam’. Project Kadam, is an entrepreneurial endeavour aimed at facilitating the economic empowerment of the cobbler community, group of people who are often forgotten in the diadem of culture that India is. The crux of Project Kadam is to use the dormant creative energies of the cobblers to curate trendy designs for our collections and with the aid of their knowledge about the business, obtain low cost raw materials like soles, laces etc to manufacture our chappals. Kadam is a multifaceted project, along with protecting the local artists, this entrepreneurial endeavor is an environmental struggle towards climate action, waste reuse, reduction and redirection. Each cycle for the production of a new collection begins with a denim donation drive. Denim is a non recyclable fashion staple and a soil coagulant.With the help of Project Kadam 10 cobbler families, including 50 people and 23 children, now have a higher standard of living, the financial safety that comes with becoming a part of Project Kadam has now enabled them to enroll their children in school.Kadam has been successfully represented and applauded on national level. This year, we also plan to foray into a new project revolving around the stigma towards Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and persons with autism. The project will aim to create acceptance of the community and sensitize individuals about autism while focusing on the skill development and employability of the community.
