Time isn’t the best measure of impact, especially outside the hard sciences. Many people have come and gone in my life. A few left a real mark, and one did so in just a matter of minutes.I live by two principles that guide me through everything I do.The first is a simple one: only you have the ability to control yourself; everything else is meaningless.A dear botany professor taught and reinforced it in me. It sounds obvious, but living by it is hard, and it changes everything.The second is rarer. Throughout his one-hour lecture, a substitute zoology professor kept repeating the importance of being humble. But another thing he said just once stuck with me:\"Instead of asking for a boon, be the boon.\" Aim to be the kind of person whose presence, no matter how brief, makes someone else\'s life better, even if it’s just helping a stranger onto a bus.He definitely achieved that with me. But funny thing is, he only gave us a lecture that one time, and I don’t even remember his name.These two principles, though introduced to me in passing moments, have shaped every decision I make.
