I am a partner in indirect tax practice of BDO, based in Mumbai. I have experience of over 22 years in indirect tax consulting, working with clients across a range of industries in all indirect taxes (i.e. GST, excise, service tax, VAT, customs etc) and foreign trade policy.At the time of introduction of GST, for about a year, I led indirect tax practice of PwC for Gujarat region, taking the practice to a market leadership position in Gujarat region in terms of revenue numbers, market positioning and team size, starting from a very small base, in a span of less than a year. I worked with various clients for transition to GST regime (mainly in pharma and engineering industry) and also supported the clients in advocacy for issues faced by various industries in GST. I have worked on a significant number of due diligence assignments (~ 500 DDs) across industries, which helped me in gaining insights in business models and issues faced by various industries. I have also been involved in advising the clients on various issues across industries and to assist in structuring of various transactions. I also advised the clients on various issues in setting up the business and structuring the contracts. Some of the industries where I have advised clients - media and entertainment, telecom, pharma, FMCG, infrastructure, aerospace and defence, aviation, manufacturing etc. In PwC, I had taken up an internal role to act as Centre of Excellence for the PwC indirect tax practice pan India, taking firmwide positions on issues and determining the positions on issues referred by the engagement teams. I was also leading the knowledge management initiatives for PwC indirect tax practice, where I was contributing in preparing various alerts / publications and training for teams. I had worked in this role for about three years. I am a Chartered Accountant (qualified in 2002) and hold a Diploma in Information Systems Audit (2005) from ICAI. Views are personal.
