It got its start by providing ocean transportation services between Oahu and Molokai. Later, to separate harbor operations and charter activities from Young Brothers\' interisland freight operations, Hawaiian Tug & Barge was formed as a sister company. In Saltchuk Resources, Inc. of Seattle, Washington, the parent company of Foss Maritime, acquired Young Brothers and selected assets of Hawaiian Tug & Barge. In 2013 Hawaiian Tug & Barge was rebranded, and incorporated into the Foss Maritime fleet, while Young Brothers remains a wholly own subsidiary of Foss.
