Pygmy Survival Alliance is a volunteer 501(c)3 organization working to help save lives among the Batwa Pygmies of Rwanda. More than half the infants were dying before age 5 when we began work with the Village of Bwiza. Today, we have a new crops on the land we’ve purchased to build the Amakondera Institute of Culture and Early Childhood Education. Thanks to community engagement and relational development, this historic culture is on the rebound.

ABOUT KARL WEYRAUCH
I have a wide background that includes clinical medicine and public health, medical research ethics, micro-development for indigenous African people, and poetry. These days, projects, travel, and family life keep me happily connected and able to contribute. Currently, our team is working with the Batwa of Rwanda to build the Amakondera Institute for Culture and Early Childhood Education and are actively seeking others to partner with us. I have a BA in Anthropology from Swarthmore College, MD from Cornell University Medical College and MPH from the University of Washington; then twenty years full practice as a Family Physician; Director of Clinical Research for Group Health Spokane and Chief of Staff for Group Health Permanente. I was Clinical Instructor at the Universities of Washington, Albany and Pittsburgh; authored over 40 scientific and literary publications; and edited eZAAPP, the email ‘zine of the American Association of Physician Poets. My skills in clinical science, ethics and management allow me to play the role of team member and team leader with a good sense of humor. At Western IRB, I reviewed thousands of scientific research protocols; actively identified and managed adverse safety events for global stakeholders, and designed new drug and device research for biotech start-ups and major non-profits. I received a Hero’s award from Hemisphere Magazine, a National Research Service Award from the NIH; the Service Star Award from Group Health Cooperative; and a nomination for the Pushcart Prize in Poetry.
