ABOUT KARLA PACKHAM-CORTEIL CMGR

My career began in Facilities Management, stepping into leadership early and learning largely through doing. There was little structured development at the start, so I grew in the way that suited me best, through practice, reflection, and eventually a leadership programme that gave shape to what experience had already begun to build. It was a slower path than it needed to be. Learning through trial, self-reflection, and quietly observing others taught me a great deal, but it also showed me how much difference the right support at the right time can make. As I progressed, I became deliberate about creating that for the people around me, putting supervisors and junior managers through leadership programmes, coaching and mentoring wherever I could. It became the part of my work I valued most, and ultimately the reason I moved into leadership development and coaching full-time.Building capability in emerging and early-stage leaders, particularly those who have arrived in management without adequate preparation or a clear developmental path, remains at the heart of what I do. My work sits at the intersection of organisational psychology and applied practice. I translate research into something practitioners can actually use, not as a simplification of the evidence, but as a faithful application of it.My MSc in Psychology, completed with Distinction, explored leadership aspiration and emergence in introverted individuals. I am currently completing an MSc in Occupational and Organisational Psychology, deepening my understanding of leadership, personality, culture, and wellbeing at work.Introverted leadership is a particular focus. Not as a niche interest, but as something I see repeatedly in practice. When development programmes are built around extroverted norms, introverted leaders tend to be the ones who get overlooked and underestimated. That\'s the gap I\'m most interested in closing.I write about these themes in my newsletter, People, Place and Practice. I am also involved in leadership development and mentoring through IWFM and CMI, and volunteer as a committee member on the IWFM People Development Special Interest Group. If you work in FM, develop leaders, or think carefully about personality and workplace culture, I am always glad to connect with people who take these questions seriously.
