About Karl Melder
I am a Senior Ux Researcher who has devoted a majority of my career to productivity tools…
Experience
Senior Ux Researcher
Jan 1991 — Present
Over my time at Microsoft, I have supported a variety teams, products, technologies, and contexts scoped towards productivity tools supporting software developers. My Ux roles have included individual contributor, project lead, and manager. Senior Ux Researcher (current) Responsibilities include maturing our division’s qualitative approaches in support of our divisional shift to a hypothesis-driven culture. This includes coaching our engineering teams to effectively engage with customers using a variety of methods to uncover both articulated and unarticulated needs. To scale my influence, I have developed training materials, guidance, and conducted workshops on a wide variety of Ux methods and processes including interview training, survey design, and field training. Applied research skills include survey design, lab studies, lean Ux, field studies, usability studies, interviewing, heuristic evaluation, contextual inquiry, ethnography, concept testing, affinity diagram, card sorting, eye tracking, and focus groups. In my lead/manager role I was responsible for the formation and growth of our Ux Research Team within the Developer Division. Traditional ‘usability testing’ methods and skills at the time were insufficient for the breadth and depth of research needed to support our tools and technology design decisions. As the first Ux Manager in the Developer Division, I led our efforts to recruit for ‘potential’ for both technical and research skills as well as fostering new methods and processes (techniques to study collaboration, conduct longitudinal studies, adoption funnel, and behavioral models). Several of these hires are now in Senior, Principle, and Director level positions across the company.
