Defiance, Insubordination, and Disrespect: Perceptions of Power in Middle School Discipline: Mixed-methods study conducted at a large, urban middle school. Analyzed student disciplinary data, disciplinary referral forms for defiance, and semi-structured interviews with teachers.Who Gets Disciplined for What? A Quantitative Case Study of Disciplinary Infractions at a Massachusetts Middle School: Investigated differences in the types of disciplinary infractions incurred by middle-school students over 4 years with respect to their gender, race, and socio-economic status. Harvard Achievement Support Initiative (HASI): Co-led evaluation project to determine effectiveness of HASI’s signature after-school programs: SmartTALK and Mind in the Making. Developed interview protocol in conjunction with HASI; conducted interviews with program leaders, community partners, and principals in 10 Boston public elementary schools; coded and analyzed interview transcripts; and co-wrote final evaluation report.Harvard Family Research Project (HFRP): For HFRP’s Out-of-School Time (OST) research department, provided qualitative analysis for a national Wallace Foundation-funded research study of six cities’ efforts to recruit and retain middle and high school youth in after-school programs. Freeman Sullivan & Co: As Field Research Coordinator for Youth Violence Prevention Study for Stanford University’s Center for Research/Disease Prevention, worked with school administrators and teachers in low-income communities throughout California to survey ninth and tenth graders about youth violence.
