The County Treasurer is an elected official governed by the California Government Code and is responsible for the preservation of capital through sound financial management. The safekeeping of these assets requires the receipt of all monies for deposit, maintenance of accurate records, cashflow projections, and daily investing of monies in the pooled portfolio. The pool participants include the County, Schools, College, Special Districts, and Independent Agencies. In addition, the office oversees unclaimed and missing heirs property, custody of investments, debt issuances and service. The Treasurer is also the ex-officio member on the Retirement Board.The County Tax Collector is an elected official governed by the Revenue and Taxation Code and is responsible for the billing and collection of all real and personal property taxes. These taxes are the assessments on secured, unsecured, supplemental, and delinquent roll property taxes. In addition, the office collects the Motel/Hotel Transient Occupancy Tax. The Tax Collector is responsible for the auction of all tax defaulted properties.The Merced County Treasurer\'s office is located on the main floor of the County Administration Building at M Street, Merced, CA 95340. ABOUT KAREN ADAMS
Karen Adams is the Merced County Treasurer-Tax Collector and Investment Officer. Karen is a Certified Public Accountant and a Magna Cum Laude graduate from California State University, Stanislaus. She has worked in positions of increasing responsibility with Merced County since 1993. Karen’s previous experience includes 15 years as co-owner and operations manager of a construction company. Having worked in private industry and at a Certified Public Accounting firm, she is well versed in accounting. Prior to her becoming the Elected Treasurer-Tax Collector in March 2002, Karen served as the Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector for 5 years. Karen believes it is important for the taxpayers to be aware that in addition to collecting property taxes, the County Treasurer provides a great cash management and investment service for the County and its other participants. As the Treasurer, Karen is also the Ex Officio Trustee for the Merced County Employees Retirement Association. She is honored to be entrusted with tax collection and is committed to the preservation of capital through safe investing of all monies.
