The Associate Vice President, External Affairs acts as the lead researcher, advisor, and right-hand person to the Vice President, External Affairs. The AVP External spearheads research, prepares lobby documents, supports campaigns, and leads other political and administrative duties in conducting student advocacy at all levels of government.Duties include:• Conducting mixed-methods research projects as assigned in support of a data-driven and research-based advocacy model• Preparing lobby documents and research briefs that could directly impact government policy and that will be used to lobby selective levels of government• Developing a strong grasp on issues such as post-secondary education affordability, student financial aid, transit accessibility and funding, domestic and international student issues, and other undergraduate and graduate student issues• Working with UBC Enrolment Services to respond to U-Pass inquiries from students, including but not limited to exemption, eligibility, subsidies• Coordinating, engaging, and consulting with student groups on campus, especially marginalized communities, to create and inform advocacy through an equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) lens• Working with the AMS executive, campus organizations, and off-campus groups to create partnerships• Helping organize and lead events, conferences, and long term projects/campaigns directed around post-secondary issues• Sitting on both related UBC and AMS committees and working groups at the request of the VP External• Attending meetings on behalf of the VP External as required• Attending and speaking at City Council, Mayor’s Council, TransLink meetings, Provincial, Federal, and Municipal Lobby Meetings, and U-Pass Advisory Committee with the VP External, where necessary• Assisting in scheduling, organizing, and planning meetings and other administrative duties as required• Works within the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department

ABOUT KAREEM HASSIB
I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies at UBC, an interdisciplinary multi-faculty/department program taught at Canada’s #1 Geography and Planning departments, alongside a minor in African Studies with a focus on African musical traditions, critical and postcolonial theory, and urban development. I am currently serving my second term as a UBC Senator, representing over students on the highest academic governing body of the university, which handles everything from student appeals, to admissions and curriculum policy. I am currently a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Communications Assistant, where I liaise with UBC students, staff and faculty involved in the UDL Fellows Program and develop stories and content about the implementation of UDL. I previously served on the UBC Board of Governors, serving on the highest body of a university with a $3 Billion+ annual budget, making decisions around land use, property, finances, research, and more. I was also the first 1st year student in UBC history to be elected to the Board. Some of my main academic interests are urban development, city governance, transportation systems, international politics, public policy, and applied ethics. I am passionate about the importance of rapid transit and walkable streets in combating social inequality and climate change. I have received multiple honours and certifications for academic and musical achievements. I previously worked as a Project Assistant, Student Fundraiser at the Department of Development Annual Giving Students, under UBC Development and Alumni Engagement. In this role, I raise money for key UBC initiatives, with a primary focus on raising money for student bursaries and financial aid, doing outreach to alumni and donors from UBC\'s global network. I also previously worked as a Cultural Assistant at the UBC English Language Institute, where I helped international students improve their English skills and adapt to Canadian culture. I was selected for this position from a large pool of applicants, demonstrating my communication and interpersonal skills. I am a frequent volunteer with the NDP, and sit on both Provincial and Federal EDA\'s serving in leadership roles, serve as an Executive and Mentorship Director of the BC YND, and also serve as VP Finance of the UBC NDP. I am also passionate about photography and music. I play seven instruments, have won a number of awards through my musical endeavors, and have performed with a number of honours bands, including the Conn-Selmer Junior National Honours Jazz Band at MusicFest Canada.
