Nov 2024 — Present · Ahero, KE
As a data scientist for IMTA-Health(Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture) initiative, my role is in spearheading efforts to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition in Ahero, Kisumu County Kenya by guiding interventions at the intersection of agriculture, nutrition, and climate resilience. Here’s my journey: Designing Data Strategy: Building a household-level resilience framework, integrating 510 farmer surveys, climate datasets, and health metrics to quantify the link between IMTA adoption and nutrition outcomes. Turning fragmented data into actionable insights. Championing Climate Resilience: 60% of farmers recognize climate threats, but their top concerns—floods (1st), droughts (2nd), crop diseases (3rd)—demand hyperlocal solutions. 🩺 Mapped Nutrition Gaps: Analyzed dietary patterns (fish and vegetable consumption, meal frequency). Households with balanced diets report 15% fewer health issues, yet 60% struggle to maintain nutritional diversity.🤖 Building Predictive Tools: Engineering models forecasting mixed farming yields under drought/flood scenarios, empowering farmers to plan ahead. Designing dashboards for tracking current and future impacts of IMTA. Driving Community Impact: Leading workshops to upskill stakeholders in data literacy, turning farmers into data advocates. Key Discoveries:Youth disengagement risks future food security.Gender dynamics require tailored extension services.IMTA’s untapped potential lies in reframing existing practices.Nutrition gaps demand systemic, not just educational, fixes. This project isn\'t just about data—it is about people. Every line of code, every dashboard, and every model is a step toward ensuring families in Ahero could thrive amid climate uncertainty.#DataForGood #ClimateResilience #SustainableAgriculture #NutritionSecurity #Kenya(Project funded by Grand Challenges Canada | Partners: Kisumu County Gov’t, ICON Data and Learning Labs, TINADA Youth Action Africa)
