ABOUT KAMAL AKWARA
I’m fascinated with people and culture, and it stems from my upbringing. I was born in New York and lived in the Northeast till I was 10 when my mom decided it was time to pack up and go back to Nigeria.10 years old living in Nigeria was a culture shock. Nigerians are very boisterous and fun-loving people who are not shy about disciplining kids. I ascribe that to the fact that it’s by far the most populous black country in the world, with almost 200 million people living in a country about one and a half times the size of Texas. You have to be loud to be heard. Lagos, where we lived, is a megacity with over 15 million people. The scene in Lagos is like stepping on an anthill - millions of people bustling about like ants scurrying from the hill. Another unique thing about Nigeria is the religious makeup. The country is evenly split between Christians and Muslims. My dad is a devout born again, Christian, and my mother is a devout Muslim. By the time I was 15, I was over the culture shock and very acclimated to Nigeria, so my mom decided it was time to shift my world again and send me off to school in London for 2 years to do my A levels. Living in London, England, was a very different experience than living in Lagos, Nigeria. After 2 years in England, I returned to the US to go to Drexel University, which was the launching pad for my professional carrier in IT consulting. It took me to many states all over the US and eventually brought me here to LA, where I settled. Growing up in different cultures was my norm, which created in me “cultural openness” and taught me that there is more commonality than difference in all of us, and I strive to focus on that. “Cultural openness” is at the root of what drives me professionally and personally.
