About Kalaiselvi Senthil
My initial research career started as plant biochemist at the Centre for Plant Molecular Biology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. Later my post doctoral fellowships at Konkuk University, S. Korea and National Institute of Crop Science, Japan on tissue culture of bent grass and gene expression in the dicot model system soybean resepctively gave me the much needed understanding of working in various areas of plant system including tissue culture of ornameltals and the food crop. This also motivated me to integrate the basic understanding of Plant tissue culture with potential for commercial exploitation in medicinal plants. Withania somnifera commonly known as Indian ginseng, is a promising medicinal plant with potential similarities to the Panax ginseng. My interest is to establish a viable invitro culture system for the production of secondary metabolites from Withania. To achieve this, an in depth understanding of the biosynthetic pathway and a comparative growth characteristics and accumulation pattern in invitro to field grown tissues is essential. The transcriptome paper on withania published during 2009 is a pioneering work funded by a DBT project along with the novel approach of identifying new compounds by bioconversion using bacterial beta glucosidase from food sources. My future research plan is in the frontier area of Systems biology where, genomics, proteomics and metabolomics of in vitro cultured tissues of withania will be integrated to understand and augment the biosynthesis of withanolides. Also, validation of the use of withanolide products as a health supplement will be taken up which will aid in developing commercial formulations along with industries using the in vitro system that we have established for culturing the much sought after root tissues of withania. Collaborations have been established with Universities in S.Korea and Indonesia. Joint research and publications are worked on continuously.
