   As a research assistant, I study rare pediatric rheumatologic conditions and gain insight into the complexity of treating patients with such conditions with the guidance of an incredible PI and rheumatologist, Dr. Pui Lee. We receive blood samples both locally from patients at Boston Children’s Hospital and globally from doctors around the world who are in search of answers to best serve their patients. Our immunology lab focuses on deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2), so I run assays to test the protein activity level for patients who fit the phenotype for this disease and I run flow cytometry to determine the interferon levels associated with the disease. Additionally, I run flow cytometry for a plethora of other rare pediatric conditions, such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MISC), macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA), coatomer subunit alpha (COPA), Kawasaki disease (KD), and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), to test the interferon signatures and T cell activation patterns both pre and post treatment. Along with the data that I obtain within the lab, I track patient progress via hematology laboratory results, clinical documentation, and shadowing Pui. Importantly, I further my knowledge by attending weekly pediatric rheumatology case conferences in which doctors collaborate in order to better treat complicated medical conditions and weekly pediatric rheumatology grand rounds in which a different focus is selected each week for doctors to stay up to date in the field.
