The Kompetenzzentrum Diabetes Karlsburg (KDK), founded in 2016 and funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is a cooperation initiative between the Dr. Guth GmbH & Co. KG and the Leibniz-Institute for Plasma Science and technology. The KDK is active in the field of clinic-accompanying research, development and testing of innovative technologies in medicine. The interdisciplinary team from the fields of physics, biology, engineering, laboratory and clinic has access to comprehensive laboratory and equipment for microbiological and cell biological research, various physical diagnostics and measuring stations up to rapid prototyping as well as medically approved devices for clinical examinations and therapy. The application oriented research project are focussing on therapy, diagnostic but also on prevention of wounds - in the context of diabetes and cardiology. The KDK is tightly connected to the Center for Innovation Competence (ZIK) plasmatis at the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP Greifswald), which focusses on basic - interdisciplinary research merging the expertise of plasma-physicist and molecular biologists and chemists – investigating the influence of cold physical plasma on living matter. The goal is to reveal the complex interactions of cold plasma components with living cells and tissues. Thereby, understanding the mechanisms will finally help to modulate cellular activities in order to find new therapies for chronic wounds and skin treatment as well as other redox-based diseases. Working together with basic researchers of the INP, the KDK is capable to perform applied research at the high level with state-of-the-art equipment. Building up an ISO 13485 conform procedure for the development of medical devices, the KDK is highly attractive for companies looking for a partner in medical device development - and testing - within a clinical environment.
