About Jonathan W. Wilson

Trained at Syracuse University, I taught college-level history for more than a decade. In 2023, I was promoted to secondary education, joining the Wardlaw-Hartridge School, a 143-year-old independent school near New York City. Here, I teach every section of ninth-grade Global Humanities and the senior Capstone Research Seminar. As the ninth-grade class dean, I also teach Foundations, a weekly introduction to high school.Emphasizing imagination and moral growth, my approach to history education, inspired by the Ignatian pedagogical paradigm, invites young people to reason together and build understanding across cultural boundaries. In 2022, this approach was recognized in La Salle University\'s annual Presidential Teaching Award, honoring \"creative, experiential learning with primary sources,\" combined with \"compassion and support for [students] as individuals.\" Outside the classroom, I\'m a contributor and chapter editor for The American Yawp (Stanford University Press, 2019), a popular open U.S. history textbook with a new edition in press (expected in May 2026). I also wrote Blue Book Diaries, a weblog on history pedagogy that was visited more than times in 2021. In 2025, I started coursework toward an MEd in curriculum and instruction (gifted education emphasis) from the University of Virginia.Opinions I express outside the classroom—whether as a citizen or as a scholar—do not represent the views of my current or past employers or any other institutions.
