About Jesse Wodin

Jesse is a level 1 manager (group leader) for org 5264 at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, NM at the MESA (Microsystems Engineering, Science and Applications) Center. We conduct R&D in photonic circuits and devices, VCSELs, RF devices, MEMS, quantum devices, and additive manufacturing for scientific and national security applications.Previously, Jesse ran the Applied Sciences (AS) Department at SRI International, a non-profit R&D organization. The AS dept. spans multiple SRI offices in the US, including Menlo Park CA, Princeton NJ, and Boulder, CO. AS consists of two laboratories - the Applied Physics (Signals & Photonics) Lab and the Quantum & Semiconductor Lab. We conduct R&D in RF signals and related hardware systems, RF photonics, positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), quantum sensing and metrology, advanced radar, space-based optical communication and timing systems, over-the-horizon RF, semiconductors, and chip-scale hardware security.Previously, Jesse worked at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory on a large team studying properties of subatomic particles called neutrinos on the DoE funded EXO experiment. The goal of this program was to probe the fundamental nature of anti-neutrinos. Results of this field or research may help indicate why universe is made of matter instead of antimatter, provide insight into supernovae, and help us probe the large-scale matter structure of the universe. Jesse co-ran data analysis for the EXO experiment coordinating analyses of large datasets among scientists. Additionally, Jesse has experience in project planning and management, scientific computing, and hardware R&D of new technologies related to radiation detection, single-atom trapping, and lasers. Jesse is published in multiple peer-reviewed scientific journals and has been an invited speaker at multiple international particle and nuclear physics conferences. Jesse received his Ph.D. ’07 in experimental particle physics at Stanford University. He developed a new cryogenic liquid-xenon based high resolution particle detector, as well as a single-ion trap for Barium spectroscopy. This R&D is the basis for the EXO-200 experiment, a deep-underground cryogenic neutrino physics experiment that ran until 2019. Jesse received his B.S. ’00 in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked for Professor Peter Fisher on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (http://ams.nasa.gov/), currently operating on the ISS studying dark matter, anti-matter, and other properties of the space radiation environment.

Experience

  1. Manager (Group Leader) Iii-v Photonics & Hi Sensors

    Sandia National Laboratories

Oct 2025 — Present · Albuquerque, NM, US

Overseeing a group conducing R&D in acousto-electrics/magnetics, RF (Ku-band to G-band), photonics, quantum computing and networking components, VCSELs, and additive manufacturing. Most of our work is centered around developing heterogeneously integrated sensors and components in the electromagnetic and quantum domains including lasers, modulators, RF system components (filters, amplifiers, circulators), single photon emitters, gyroscopes, magnetic field sensors, and quantum memory components.
