Veteran financial writer/reporter/editor. I’ve seen every market tantrum from the Russian default and Long-Term Capital Management to the recent head-spinning lurches from Higher for Longer to Soft Landing back to HFL. Experienced in equities and energy; passion is macro/fixed income, from Treasuries to triple-C loans, and discerning what those prices are telling us about the future. Able to render complicated concepts into clear, and hopefully enjoyable, prose. I’ve covered the entire lifecycle of high yield and leveraged, from new issuance through bankruptcy. Well-versed in eco data, Fed policy and Fedspeak. A master builder of happy and productive teams, well-regarded mentor and provider of feedback. I’m the Swiss Army Knife of newsrooms: give me a problem and it’s highly likely I’ll be able to solve it with a minimum of fuss. Omnivorous reader, primarily history: financial – interest rates and the creation/growth of markets and trade (how did tin mined in Cornwall end up in Novgorod?) – Napoleonic Era, English Civil War, American Civil War, Russia, Dostoevsky, anything and everything about England, especially the Anglo-Saxon period. Also history of ideas, philosophy (eg Michael Oakeshott) and theology (Church Fathers through the 7th Ecumenical Council). Wargames (La Bataille, Battles from the Age of Reason, Great Campaign/Great Battles of ACW – besides the educational aspect, all sorts of cool math/probability calculations). Musician (doom metal) supported by a fleet of Gibson guitars. One day there’ll be an album. Proudest accomplishment? That every team I ever ran was happy and productive.
