About Justin Scott
I\'m an executive who still reads the logs, writes code, and takes a very hands-on approach to infrastructure management. Most security leaders at the C-suite level are setting direction, reviewing dashboards, and delegating the details. That\'s a legitimate way to operate, it\'s just not how I do it. As CISO of Smart Communications, I own the security strategy, compliance frameworks, and audit relationships. I\'m also the person who knows what\'s running on the servers, tunes the queries when the database is grinding, and troubleshoots infrastructure at night to keep critical systems running for the government agencies and correctional facilities we serve.I call it having dirt under my fingernails. I think it makes me a better security leader and a better partner to the teams I work with.My path here wasn\'t a straight line up a corporate ladder. In I founded a managed DNS service provider and ran it for 12 years before selling it. In 2011 I joined Smart Communications as a technical co-founder, built the company\'s software and IT systems from the ground up, and grew into my current role as CISO.Smart Communications operates at the intersection of government, corrections, and communications, which means our security and compliance obligations are serious and layered. I lead our posture across SOC 2, CJIS, PCI DSS, HIPAA, and NIST 800-53, and I have deep working knowledge of the infrastructure underneath: over 150 remote client sites, multiple data centers, colocation environments, and a distributed workforce across the United States. My technical roots are in full-stack development and systems administration, primarily ColdFusion, MS SQL Server, and Windows/IIS environments, with experience in Linux, PHP, ASP.NET/C#, and Electron. Before \"DevOps\" had a name, I was doing the job: writing software, managing servers, designing networks, and owning the outcome end to end.I lead with honesty and I hire people I trust. Good security culture and good team culture both require open communication, clear expectations, and people who aren\'t afraid to raise a flag.Outside the office, I hold a private pilot certificate and a degree in Aviation Management. I sometimes play competitive dodgeball. I spend as much time as I can with my family in southwest Washington. If you\'re working at the intersection of infrastructure, security, and government technology, or you just want to talk shop, I\'m glad to connect.
