found myself unexpectedly launched into a career in business when a friend ambushed me in my dorm room and stuck a camera in my face. There I was, innocently working on my sociology essay like any dedicated student, when she barged in. She informed me that I just had to participate in a ‘pitch’ contest she’d heard about and immediately started recording. Well, far be it from me to disappoint an adoring fan! Without missing a beat, I grabbed the closest thing to hand: a notebook. Mentally putting myself in the shoes of someone who truly needed this ‘product,’ I pitched my heart out to my imaginary client. It was a fun creative exercise and made my friend smile, which was all that I’d hoped for. I didn’t find out until later that she actually submitted the video in the competition, and I won third place out of thousands of students in the first round! It’s funny how one simple interaction can wind up changing everything. I went on to study sales, gained some experience, and then came to Borealis as an account director. From there, I worked my way into my new role as Business Development team leader. Lots of people think that working in sales or business means being a smooth talker, but that’s not how I see it. To me, it’s really about being able to listen to people, understand their problems, and come up with meaningful solutions. I love working at Borealis, because we support responsible decision making and help organizations mitigate the social and environmental impacts of their projects.
