ABOUT JURGEN HERRE

I lead a large regional Interventional Pulmonology service that provides support to adult medicine. We see in excess of 1500 new and (total) pleural patients per annum managing the majority in an ambulatory fashion. We also undertake high volumes of bronchoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures. Our service provides advanced day-case Medical Thoracoscopy and all available pleural interventions including exceptionally high volumes of tunnelled pleural and peritoneal catheters. We have developed innovative uses for tunnelled drains in conjunction with hepatology, transplantation and oncology services, and manage these patients and devices in an ongoing fashion. We have also developed extensive experience in the use of fibrinolytics in both empyema and non-empyema settings and provide support to the Major Trauma Centre and ICUs with these approaches. We provide EBUS mediastinal diagnostics, all Advanced Bronchoscopic Techniques, Regional Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction Service, Bronchial Thermoplasty as well as mobile Thoracic Ultrasound, across all specialties, within our institution. We provide technical training to a wide spectrum of medical grades and specialties including SpR and Consultant level training to Intensive Care, Acute Medicine, Paediatrics and Radiology. We also provide simulation based training to junior doctors and SpRs. We have developed a universal Point of Care Ultrasound Course for Acute Specialties (POCAS) to integrate all established ultrasound training certifications into a single platform. We are working to expand this training to undergraduate Medical Students. My research interests are focussed on inflammation and infection in the lung, pleural diseases as well as molecular diagnostics in lung and pleural sepsis. We contribute actively to research projects in pulmonology and thoracic oncology. We are currently leading an RCT focussed on pain secondary trapped lung during effusion drainage.
