About Junfan Jane Pan

As a loyal fan of science fiction movies, I have always believed that robots are the demonstration of humans’ supreme wisdom, just as human beings are Nature’s masterpiece. It is this passion for robots and the desire to create new technologies that changed my life path and led me to explore the field of engineering. My road to engineering has not been smooth sailing as I once had a painful struggle between my parents’ ideas and my inner calling. During college, I spent one year studying Business Administration which was my parents’ favorite major. Although I stayed as the top student in BA up to sophomore year, I found I still had an unquenchable love for the creation of new technology and this inner desire finally drove me to transfer to mechanical engineering. The transition from business to engineering was quite challenging as I had to make up 39 credits of core courses while simultaneously taking advanced courses in the new major. In spite of the extremely heavy workload, I still achieved great success and graduated as the top student in ME.As a master’s student at Robotics, I am so curious and excited about learning and exploring new technologies. To understand how robots “perceive” the world, I studied Computer Vison and worked with various Sensors; to figure out how robots “think”, I studied Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Reinforcement Learning; to understand how robots “behave”, I studied Motion Planning and Decision Making. I am always prepared to learn new topics and challenge myself every day and am eager to apply what I have learned in industry.I think it is important to be a lifelong learner, not limited to work and academic study. On the one side, I am passionate about taking every chance to expand my knowledge and expertise in Robotics. One the other side, I have a lot of fun learning new skills and knowledge. I enjoy reading classic literature books, especially on philosophy and aesthetics. I love learning new languages, practicing karate and playing musical instruments, such as the keyboard and the flute.
