ABOUT JUMOKE MCDUFFIE-THURMOND
I am a writer, performer, and arts educator based in Brooklyn, NY. Through my work, I am committed to participating in storytelling and pedagogy that is in service of those whose narratives have often been omitted or underrepresented. My aim is to engage people with creative content that empowers them on a personal and socio-political level. As a performer and lecturer, I’ve presented work at various universities, schools, and conferences, including The Country School, Emory University, Williams University, Wesleyan University, and the European Fine Arts forum in Riga, Latvia.I graduated from Wesleyan University in 2019 with a B.A. in African-American Studies, specifically focusing in Black Performance, and am currently the Culture & Equity Coordinator at Pace Gallery. My latest project engages archives of enslavement and poetry to combat the visual and linguistic manifestations of anti-blackness found in documents from antebellum Edgefield, South Carolina.
