Julie Hwang currently supervises sync licensing for North America on behalf of K7 Music GmbH (!K7, Strut Records, DJ-Kicks) and its independent distribution label partners for advertising, tv & film placement. She was also recently a freelance licensing consultant for clients such as Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, Oprah/OWN, NAACP Awards, Death Wish Coffee, BET Bigger, and Peacock.Julie started her early licensing years at BMG and Sony before she landed her dream job working on album releases at Tommy Boy Music through its final days. Then she spent 5 years at MTV Networks, where she hired and managed a team of 7 music & media licensing specialists for MTV, VH1 and Comedy Central, and then later became the creative placement lead for mobile product development at MTV, VH1 and Comedy Central, which brought over $1M per year in revenue.After that Julie ran the sync division at Shelly Bay Music under industry publisher Michelle Bayer for 5 years, where she exclusively represented the largest indie catalogs in the music industry, and then later served as Creative Lead at Getty Images Music\'s content operations on behalf of independent music contributors for 3 years. Julie\'s prior experience also includes music supervision for Bud Light Live\'s national campaign for 2 years. She supervised talent for 25 different tv ads that aired live on NBC prime-time, as well as 20 national radio ads, while working for the first live-streaming concert website called Digital Club Network (DCN, now The Orchard). For 5 years at DCN, she secured rights with over 300 artists, greenlit nightly live performances throughout 50 active venues, and curated concerts for the earliest DSP\'s. She also project-managed live album releases, one of which - Blue Mountain\'s \"Tonight Is Now Or Never\"- made David Fricke\'s Rolling Stone Top 10 List that year.Julie also owns and operates FEAR LESS GRRL Self-Defense in North Brooklyn. She teaches free classes in her community and conducts private self-defense workshops throughout NYC. She is certified to teach basic self-defense and personal safety to (cis/gnc/trans) women and children over 6 and has apprenticed under Gabrielle Rubin at Female Awareness in Manhattan. She also served as a part-time Empowerment Self-Defense Staff Instructor for 4 years at The Center For Anti-Violence Education, a non-profit in Brooklyn, where she taught over 15 NYC schools and colleges, and conducted over 100 Empowerment Self-Defense and Upstander Training / Active Bystander (identity harassment response) workshops throughout the the NYC metropolitan area.
