For most executive clinicians, healthcare is a calling, not a vocation. My muse pointed to my future and said, “Service.” Subnotes included “Sacrifice.” “Responsibility.” “Devotion.” Even, “Love.”At least, that’s how it happened for me. Patient care called me, and I followed my muse. I still do, even today.Her edict took root deeply, into my core values. Healing the sick became the purpose of my career and my overarching mission.That calling was foundational to my origin story. But I’ve been pondering its relevance lately, wondering about principles for my mission going forward. It’s not unusual nowadays for industry leaders to do a refresh on their purpose. Healthcare has been a wild ride.So, I posed a question to myself: “What is my guiding principle for healthcare leadership going forward?”After much consideration, the answer is clear.My role as a healthcare leader is to illuminate my love of people and patient care and create a legacy for the healing work we do.I see the role of healthcare leadership as a lighthouse, pointing the way to a redefinition of effective care that embraces new ideas, different approaches, and innovative technologies that carry the mission of patient care into the future.Of course, I have my hunches as to the direction we will be taking, and I hope to see some current trends convert to standard operating procedures, such as: Building relationship-focused cultures Creating innovative care-delivery models Optimizing employee engagement Deploying effective recruitment & retention systems Making work creative and fun Daring to trust Celebrating what’s right in the worldMy lifelong quest was to become a nurse. Along the way, I’ve decided to become a lighthouse, too. Stranger things have happened on the path of transformational leadership!I look forward to the years ahead.
