c2architecturestudio’s creative efforts have been recognized by noteworthy awards, including a 2013 AIA/DC Unbuilt Award of Merit (infoCUBE: Light Monitors); 2008 Society of American Registered Architects Design Award (Dentalium); and a 2001 AIA National Honor Award (Huntington Woods Community Center). Most recently, Julie was included in the 49th Anniversary edition (November 2015) of SPACE in the feature \"The Creative Geography of Korean Architects in the World.\"c2architecturestudio was invited and included as one of 12 architectural firms included in Architect (Korean Architects Association)\"Young Korean Architects in the Global Context,\" and was also included in Architectural Record\'s Emerging Architect series (June 2010). Julie’s original work has been exhibited at the Kibel Gallery, Cranbrook Art Museum, District Architecture Center (DC), Detroit Public Library, FLAK Gallery, and the Detroit Artists’ Market. She is currently working on a book that offers a lens to view applied urban and architectural design principles on cities and sites in transition, revealing their potential through new urban landscapes, architectural provocations and the inherently optimistic acts of making and building.c2 is a critical architectural practice structured as a research engine. ABOUT JULIE JU-YOUN KIM
Julie Ju-Youn Kim, FAIA is the William H. Harrison Professor and Chair of the School of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she founded and directs the Flourishing Communities Collaborative, an interdisciplinary research and design lab. She is also founder and principal of c2architecture studio, a 100% woman-owned firm. Recognized for her scholarship and design pedagogy, she received the 2024 AIAS Educator Impact Honor Award, the 2023 AIA Georgia Educator of the Year, and the 2023 ACSA Collaborative Practice Award for bridging academia and practice through replicable, equity-centered engagement models. In 2025, she was elevated to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows for her significant contributions to the profession.As an educator and licensed architect, Julie’s work explores the evolving discipline and practice of architecture. Supported by grants from the New Venture Fund/Public Interest Technology University Network and the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation, her research and teaching employ data-driven, quantitative methods to address social and cultural challenges in the built environment. Julie has been featured in international journals including SPACE, Korean Architect, and Architectural Record – and her professional work has received recognition from awards programs, including an AIA/DC Unbuilt Award, SARA Design Award, and an AIA National Honor Award. Her publications reflect a commitment to interdisciplinary architectural education. She is the editor and author of Interdisciplinary Design Thinking in Architecture Education (Routledge, 2023); a contributing author to Teaching Carbon Neutrality: A Compilation of Award-winning Architectural Design Studio Methodologies (Routledge, 2025); and a contributor to Teaching and Designing in Detroit: Ten Women on Pedagogy and Practice (Routledge, 2020). Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College and a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
