Serve as a critical member of a specialized ambulance team focused exclusively on responding to overdose emergencies throughout San Francisco- Collaborate closely with a paramedic to provide rapid response and initial resuscitation efforts for individuals experiencing an overdose. ABOUT JULIANNA FIGUEROA-PAREDES
For the longest time, I aspired to a career in firefighting, advancing to paramedic school by the age of 20. However, life had other plans. I earned my bachelor\'s degree in public health and health equity and am now a returning community college student completing the final prerequisites needed to excel on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and apply to medical colleges. I have an undeniable passion for healthcare and emergency medicine, driven by the adrenaline rush and profound satisfaction of responding to emergencies as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). I am committed to advancing my career in emergency medicine within a hospital setting. The most fulfilling aspect of my work is helping people. Currently, I serve as a part-time Peer Support Specialist at Richmond Area Multi Services Inc.(RAMS), a mental health non-profit organization contracted through the San Francisco Department of Public Health. In collaboration with the San Francisco Fire Department, I am actively involved with two critical teams: the Street Overdose Response Team (SORT) and the Post Overdose Engagement Team (POET). With SORT, I ride along in a fire department vehicle with a paramedic, focusing on overdose and fentanyl-related emergencies communicated through our 911 intercom system. Our team is often the first on the scene, where we conduct essential resuscitation efforts. In my role with POET, I engage directly with unhoused individuals at high risk or who have experienced an overdose, often referred by SORT. I provide these individuals with essential resources ranging from advocacy and shelter assistance to government aid and referrals to detox programs. This part-time work complements my full-time college studies as I pursue my goal of attending medical school, allowing me to work alongside a diverse team of peers, nurses, doctors, and therapists.
