ABOUT JULIAN TAIT

I am the co-founder of Open Data Manchester CIC a not-for-profit organisation formed in 2010 that is working to create a fairer world built on responsible and intelligent data use – and helping people, organisations and communities make that happen.I am a passionate about making the development and application of data and digital technologies more ethical and that these are tools and and not a replacement for humanity. I have led on the development of the Declaration for Responsible and Intelligent Data Practice - a shared vision of what best practice in data looks like for Greater Manchester. This has been adopted by local government and private sector organisations, as well as garnering interest from other cities.Governance is a key part of my work and through the development of Open Data Manchester’s data cooperative work we have been developing a model that can empower people to have more control over their data. This has led to the development of our work around energy data cooperatives and the setting up of a Data Cooperative Working Group that draws on and shares knowledge from across the globe.Unsurprisingly open data is a big part of my work and have recently been working on the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Open Data Consultation to understand the demand-side needs of the local data community to enable local government to provide better quality open data.Internationally I have been working with the International Finance Corporation/World Bank undertaking a data maturity review, strategy and road map for implementation of open data for the City of Izmir in Turkey. I have also been a thematic advisor regarding open data for the cities of Granada, Alcoy, Arad and L’Aquila as part of the European Commission’s Digital Cities Challenge and at present are working with the cities of Tripolis and Corinthos for the Intelligent Cities Challenge.Pre-COVID I have been invited to share Open Data Manchester’s data and smart cities work both nationally and internationally.
