ABOUT JULIA JENIKEJEW

I’m a behavioral biologist with a PhD in Veterinary Research and Animal Biology, currently managing a $75M USDA-funded climate-smart initiative at Clemson University. This large-scale project promotes climate-smart practices in agriculture and forestry across South Carolina, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen biodiversity and soil health, and improve the livelihoods of farmers and landowners ‍ With over a decade of international experience, I’ve worked across academic, NGO, and applied conservation sectors—contributing to research on animal behavior, reproductive biology, and bioacoustics. From tracking lions in Namibia, observing lemurs in Madagascar to collecting data on Southern white rhinoceroses in zoos across Europe, I’ve developed a strong interest in bridging in-situ and ex-situ conservation strategies, and while working with renowned NGOs also deepened my understanding of advocacy and public engagement in conservation work. While my greatest passion lies in boots-on-the-ground fieldwork - observing animals in their natural habitats - I equally enjoy managing teams, building partnerships, engaging stakeholders, connecting with peers, and translating research into meaningful action. I thrive on collaboration & communication, whether I’m leading a cross-functional project team, mentoring students or engaging the public in science. I’ve organized international symposia, guided educational programs at zoos and authored several peer-reviewed publications on large mammal behavior. As a certified science communicator and experienced project manager, I‘m committed to bridging science and society - making research not only visible, but valuable to communities, ecosystems, and decision-makers. Let’s connect if you’re working at the interface of conservation, behavioral ecology, and public engagement—or if you just want to talk about rhino vocalizations 🦏 and making science matter!
