WORK HISTORY
Director Net Senior Software Developer - Technical Lead - Mentor - Architect @Justin Barnes Consultancy Limited
I’m a senior.NET engineer with 20+ years’ experience delivering web, cloud, and desktop solutions across finance, e-commerce, logistics, and public sector. Recent contracts include Tech Lead at Invest & Fund (migrating legacy VB.NET Web Forms to a.NET 8/CQRS platform on AWS and standing up secure auth with Cognito, WAF, and automated CI/CD) and Senior Developer roles at Gillies, where I led an Azure→AWS estate migration (Functions→Lambda, Blob→DynamoDB) and moved pipelines from Azure DevOps to GitHub Actions while hardening email deliverability and reducing cloud costs.I’ve shipped modern ASP.NET Core/React and Angular apps, re-platformed services (WCF→gRPC), and worked hands-on with AWS (EC2, Lambda, Fargate, RDS) and Azure (App Services, APIM, Functions, Cosmos DB). I’m comfortable across CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, TeamCity, Bamboo, Octopus), data (SQL Server, Dapper/EF, SSRS), and security/identity (Cognito, AD, role-based access). I emphasise unit testing (xUnit/NUnit/MSTest), clean design, and incremental, low-risk releases.Earlier engagements span TransUnion (availability improvements and DCOM→HTTP migration), DFDS (microservices on AWS with Terraform/Kubernetes), British Library (Material-designed ASP.NET/Angular migration), Sheffield AMRC (industrial WPF/TwinCAT/Halcon), and numerous.NET Framework modernisation projects. I’m used to clarifying requirements with stakeholders, shaping delivery plans, and working in agile teams to land measurable outcomes on time.

ABOUT JUSTIN BARNES
I’m a senior software engineer and cloud-native fixer who modernises legacy estates, ships resilient services at pace, and leaves teams with cleaner code, sharper pipelines, and fewer surprises. Over 15+ years I’ve delivered event-driven, testable platforms across Azure and AWS for Gillies, LMS, Keoghs, Yara, DFDS, Invest & Fund, the British Library, TransUnion and Kaplan.I design and migrate workloads with Azure Functions, App Services, APIM, Key Vault, Cosmos DB and Storage; and on AWS with Lambda, Fargate, EC2, DynamoDB, S3, Cognito, WAF and Global Accelerator. I build APIs and services in.NET 8 and the full.NET Core lineage, refactoring WCF, Web Forms and WinForms/WPF into maintainable, observable, secure architectures. Delivery is made boring on purpose: Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions for CI/CD; Terraform, Docker and Kubernetes for reproducible environments; meaningful telemetry so we know when things drift.Front-end isn’t an afterthought: I ship React, Angular and Next.js with TypeScript, accessible UI, and sensible state management. On the data side I’m comfortable across SQL Server (on-prem/RDS/Azure SQL), Cosmos DB and DynamoDB, with pragmatic use of EF/Dapper and strong boundaries around persistence. Quality is non-negotiable: XUnit/NUnit/MSTest/Jasmine, Moq/AutoFixture, structured logging, and performance budgets that actually influence design.Security is designed-in: identity/SSO, role-based access, Microsoft Identity Manager, secure payments/PCI, SMTP whitelisting, and defence-in-depth at the cloud edge. I use microservices and CQRS where they fit - and keep them on the bench when monoliths win on simplicity. Recent work includes Azure↔AWS re-platforms, WCF→gRPC migrations, claims/security integrations, high-throughput serverless back ends, and practical AI enablement with OpenAI/Azure AI to streamline real workflows. If you need someone who can untangle legacy, accelerate delivery, and leave a system measurably faster, safer and easier to change - let’s talk.
