ABOUT JUAN CONTRERAS
I’m Juan Contreras, an Engineer turned Fine Art Photographer and Oil Painter—based in Vancouver, BC. My first career was in Electrical & Systems Engineering, where I mastered precision, structure, and problem-solving. In 2008, I pivoted. I didn’t abandon logic—I infused it with vision.Since then, I’ve trained at Emily Carr University and Langara College and earned a Master’s in Photography Projects at Master PhotoEspaña in Madrid. My practice fuses photography, painting, and charcoal portraiture to explore urban environments, social dynamics, and cultural narratives.Why do I create?Because art is how I navigate and understand the world around me, photography provides structure and reflection. The fluidity of painting and drawing expresses what lies beneath the surface and explores identity, emotion, and connection.
