As the Director of Jewish Life at Duke (JLD), I lead a team of seven in advocacy, outreach, programs, and activities for Jewish students at Duke University. On a day-to-day basis, that can look like meeting a prospective student and her family to share what it\'s like being Jewish on campus, preparing a quarterly budget forecast, visiting with a donor for a major gift solicitation, having coffee with a student to learn more about them and their own Jewish journey, and meeting with a colleague to discuss the next steps for a program we\'re planning. By the numbers - in my time so far with JLD, we\'ve more than doubled our unrestricted annual giving, we\'ve received over $2M in endowment pledges and gifts, we\'ve trained over 650 faculty and staff through our 3.5 hour Antisemitism 101 seminar, and I\'ve had more than 500 individual coffee chats with students, getting to know them and helping them connect to the wider Duke community. Beyond the numbers - what\'s really at the heart of my work - the relationships that I\'ve been fortunate enough to develop with students, parents, alumni, as well as Duke and Hillel colleagues have helped to strengthen not only Duke and the Duke Jewish community, but have been some of the most personally fulfilling. I\'ve had the opportunity to celebrate with students in their moments of achievement, to comfort them in their times of stress, to teach and to learn, to create, assess, and innovate.
