ABOUT JOYCE CLAUDIA CHOO

Joyce is a LLM (International Legal Studies) candidate at New York University School of Law, where she is a Transitional Justice Scholar with the Center for Global Justice and Human Rights (CHRGJ). Joyce is currently a legal researcher for the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, attached to Commissioner Pablo de Greiff. In this capacity, she researches alleged violations of International Humanitarian Law committed by the Russian Federation, including jus cogens norms, such as war crimes and genocide. At NYU Law, she focuses on the study of Public International Law, with a specialized interest in the study of drone strike operations by powerful state actors, and mistaken targeted killings of civilians in the Middle East. Currently, she serves as a research assistant to Professor Margaret Satterthwaite (U.N. Special Rapporteur for the Independence of Judges), allowing her incorporate a perspective of judicial empowerment within her work. As a Transitional Justice Scholar, under the auspice of Pablo de Greiff (U.N. Special Rapporteur on Truth, Justice, and Non-recurrence), Joyce\'s research focuses on current trends of global governance and proven methods of transitioning authoritarian states towards democratic systems. She is also a graduate editor for the NYU Journal of International Law and Politics, and has published in reputable law journals on similar issues. Within International law and warfare, Joyce is also a Lloyd N. Cutler fellow with the Salzburg Cutler Fellowship Program, which seeks to bring the nation\'s top Law students with leading practitioners, judges and academics to cultivate outstanding scholarship in International Law. Joyce has a minor focus on Criminal Evidence, and how new fact-finding methodologies serve to introduce a mechanism of accountability within war crime tribunals. Reflectively, Joyce has researched under Professor Erin Murphy and co-authored a leading Criminal Evidence textbook in the United Kingdom (Evidence: Law and Context, 6th Edn, forthcoming). During her LLB, she was awarded the RG Lawson Law Prizes for the Highest marks in her cohort for Criminal Evidence and Procedure and Counter-terrorism and Human Rights respectively. Relatedly, she has also provided academic and caselaw contributions to the forthcoming Evidence Textbook for the Honourable Gerald Lebovits, during her time as a Judicial Fellow at the New York State Supreme Court.In her time off, Joyce is an activist for the anti-war movement and a protest monitor with the NYCLU advocating for police accountability!
