ABOUT JOSIE SOUTAR

My passion is working with inspiring people, isn’t it for all of us? However I don’t just mean this in the terms of your traditional inspirational leaders, I mean the everyday person who has overcome significant struggles and come out fighting! My career has been driven by the passion to work with the marginalised, people that have largely been ignored and found themselves on the edge of mainstream society. I have worked in the voluntary sector since 2005 and met the most extraordinary people who have overcome real hardships and taught me lessons in what life is really about. That is why I love the third sector, because we don’t overlook people. I know the sector is going through a challenging time, however, I think the current climate also provides real opportunities for organisations to thrive. I particularly love the role and work of local charities, working at grassroots level and embedded within our communities. More recently I have become interested in the social business model and how enterprises can provide real opportunities for social impact. It’s all about understanding what you’re good at; identifying your organisations niche and planning your income portfolio around that. This is what I aim for as CEO of Sheffield Alcohol Support Service (SASS) and it’s not all been plain sailing, but it means we keep our focus on what’s right for our service users.
